A birth certificate is the standard proof of identity and citizenship for passport applications, school enrollment and driver's license renewals. Order a Mississippi birth certificate to begin your request.
Executors and family members typically need several certified copies to close accounts, file life insurance claims and transfer property. Start with a Mississippi death certificate.
Name changes, spousal health coverage and survivor benefit claims each require proof of marriage. A certified Mississippi marriage certificate provides that documentation.
The Mississippi State Department of Health Bureau of Vital Records issues certified copies of birth certificates, death certificates and marriage records. The MSDH vital records office is located at 222 Marketridge Drive in Ridgeland, MS.
MSDH has birth and death records on file for events registered in Mississippi from November 1912 to the present.
You can order a Mississippi marriage record from MSDH for marriages that took place:
For marriages between July 1, 1938, and December 31, 1941, contact the circuit clerk in the county where the marriage license was issued. If you don’t know the county, MSDH can look it up.
You can request your certificate online instead of visiting the Ridgeland office or mailing a paper application. Our service is available to the public and to legal professionals, and ordering takes three steps.
In Mississippi, certified copies are issued only to applicants with a direct and tangible interest in the record, primarily:
We accept Visa, Mastercard and debit cards.
Our Service Fee: A processing fee is charged at the time of your order to cover the costs of our secure online platform and expert assistance.
State Agency Fee: The Mississippi State Department of Health charges a separate fee for issuing your certificate. As of October 2026, MSDH lists $17 for a certified birth, death or marriage certificate and $6 for each additional copy of the same record ordered at the same time. This fee is charged upon review and acceptance of your order and will appear as a separate item on your credit card statement.
Shipping: Additional shipping fees may apply depending on your chosen delivery method.
Please note: All state certificate fees are subject to change without notice. If no record is found, fees will be applied to cover the search cost and are non-refundable.
Yes. Your birth record remains on file with MSDH regardless of where you currently live. Eligibility depends on your relationship to the record and a valid photo ID, and the certificate can be shipped to your current address. If you were born outside of Mississippi, the National Center for Health Statistics lists the vital records office for each state.
Certified divorce decrees are available from the chancery clerk in the county where the divorce was granted. MSDH does not maintain divorce records, and US Vital Records does not order them. However, MSDH can conduct a five-year search of its county divorce indexes to locate where the divorce was granted, the book and page number in the chancery clerk's office where it was recorded for a fee of $17, as of October 2026. See the statewide list of chancery clerks.
As of October 2026, MSDH accepts a valid photo ID, including a driver's license, state ID, U.S. passport, military ID, tribal ID, temporary or permanent resident card, or school or employment ID. Applicants without a photo ID may submit two alternative documents. Accepted alternative documents include Social Security Cards, utility bill showing your address, Medicaid cards, SNAP/EBT cards showing your address, work identification and veteran universal access ID cards. If you don’t have a photo ID, an immediate family member may also apply on your behalf using their own ID. Please submit photocopies, not the original documents, with your request.
Eligible family members and legal representatives may request a death certificate. Applicants outside the immediate family must show a direct and tangible interest in the record, for example, through a joint property deed or an insurance policy listing both the applicant and the deceased.
Contact the MSDH Amendments Unit at 601-206-8200 or [email protected]. MSDH fills each request from the original record filed by the hospital, funeral home or circuit clerk, so corrections entered on an order form will not change the certificate. Certain minor corrections to a first or middle name can be made by affidavit, provided documentation shows the correct version has been in use for at least five years.
